Reactivation of the News section

This proposal deals with the reactivation of the news section of the main wiki page. The news section used to be a small place were some latest server past events were displayed. According to the IRC page, “The command is intended to be used by every user to post about news on the server”.

For technical reasons, as the integration of the news section with the irc bot seems unlikely, my proposal is to just make it a regular wiki editable section that would show on the main page. This section would work similarly to the chronicles page, showing a predefined number of latest past events. Unlike chronicles, that only show ingame history, news section would also function as a means of informing server and wiki related events. A good parallel would be discord's “information” channel, that somehow took the news function, a place that not every player of the server has access to without a invite.

Relevant points:

  • Broken windows theory - Having a broken feature of the server displayed on the main wiki page, now for many years, encourages poor care with the wiki maintenance
  • It would be a great place for old bernds, distanced from the server by the problems of life, to check what is currently happening
  • It shows that the server is not dead to the world. That it has constant updates, fixes, events and player activity
  • Incites wiki interaction. A place people could check to see the the latest gossip News
  • Tradition - the more or less way it was envisioned to be by AlphaBernd
