The Kumo Archipelago lies in the sea within Aresean territory, but is not part thereof.

Being invited by Tomoko, Kokogumi decided to move from Socier westwards to an uninhabited group of islands. The settlement of Kumo was founded a week later, after Kokogumi could decide for a fitting name.

During the second war between the Commonwealth and Ender, Kumo refused to stay neutral or join Ender's side, instead fighting as a mercenary for the Commonwealth. Following this action, Tomoko decided to exclude the Kumo Archipelage from Aresean territory, giving it independence.
